I recommend getting your hosting with the Irish company Blacknight, especially if you’re based in Ireland. This post shows you how to register a new domain with Blacknight having already purchased hosting there.
1. Search for your Domain Name
Go to the domains section and search for the domain name you want to purchase.
You will get a list of domain names that are currently available. You will see that .ie domains are more expensive and you need to provide documentation of having a valid claim to the domain in order purchase them. The more recognisable domains like .com will cost a bit more than the newer and more unusual domains.
Domains that have already been bought by someone will be shown under the Registered tab. If you already own this domain elsewhere you can choose to Transfer the domain to Blacknight here. However you will require an authorisation key from your previous domain provider to complete the transfer. This is usually something you can retrieve by logging in to your other domain provider.
2. Select the domain you want to purchase
You just use the dropdown to select how long you want to purchase your domain name for and then ‘Add to Cart’
Now click on the ‘View Cart’ option at the top of the screen to continue with the purchase.
3. Configure the domain
Choose here if you want to pay to hide your contact information. Usually this is publicly available if anyone searches for information about your domain. If this isn’t a problem for you then uncheck the bottom box to remove the privacy option from your domain.
Now you will see your domain name charge plus VAT. Use the Continue to Checkout button.
A new message appears below asking if you want to add this domain to your existing hosting.
4. Add your domain to existing hosting (optional)
Blacknight asks you if you want to add your domain to your existing hosting. Check the box.
You will be asked to log in to your Blacknight account so this domain can be added to your hosting package.
Once you enter your login details you can choose to add the domain to the hosting you’ve already bought. You can add a number of domains to the same hosting subscription. Blacknight will let you host more than one website on a Linux Minimus subscription.
5. Provide billing information
You will be taken through a few screens here to confirm your payment and finalise the order. You will get confirmation when the domain is successfully added to your account.
